About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with a strong DevOps focus to join our global engineering team, building and operating Collect — our in-house platform at the heart of everything InDebted does. This position is based in our Sydney office on a hybrid basis (3 days per week in office), keeping you in close day-to-day alignment with our engineering practices, standards, and the wider team.

You will design, build, and operate the cloud infrastructure, delivery pipelines, and observability tooling that our product teams — and ultimately our customers and clients — depend on, while driving automation and AI to remove manual operational work. This role goes well beyond writing code: you are measured by the reliability and velocity you enable, the quality of your engineering, and how you raise the operational bar for the engineers around you.

How We Work

We have a lightweight process and a strong focus on knowledge sharing. Our teams are self-organised and cross functional. We've gone all in on AI: we continuously trial new AI tools and train everyone across the team on getting the most out of them — Skills, agentic coding, and more. You'll deliver using the same practices, standards, and guardrails as the rest of the global engineering team, with a technical reporting line into engineering.

Guiding Principles

  • Single source of truth — all work is tracked in Linear, all changes are in version control, and every system has a clear owning team.
  • No special exceptions on quality — the same expectations on tests, observability, security, documentation, and code review apply to everyone; urgency does not justify "shadow" systems or shortcuts.
  • Clear accountability, shared responsibility — engineers own the outcomes of their work end to end; teams own platform integrity and long-term architecture together.
  • Bias to reuse and consolidate — prefer reusing or extending existing platforms and services over creating new ones; converge over time rather than diverge.
  • Automation first — proactively identify and eliminate manual processes; AI and automation are first-class priorities, not afterthoughts.

What You'll Do

Platform and infrastructure

  • Design, build, and evolve the cloud infrastructure behind Collect using Infrastructure-as-Code, keeping it secure, scalable, and cost-effective.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and technical direction, ensuring systems are designed to be operable, observable, and maintainable from day one.
  • Ship product features when the work calls for it — this is an engineering role first, with infrastructure as its centre of gravity.

Delivery engineering

  • Own and improve our CI/CD pipelines so that every team can ship safely, quickly, and frequently.
  • Reduce friction in the path to production — build tooling, guardrails, and paved roads that make the right way the easy way.

Reliability and incident ownership

  • Build and champion observability across the platform — metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting that make production behaviour visible.
  • Diagnose and resolve incidents, lead post-incident reviews, and feed the learnings back into the platform as improved resilience and automation.

Automation and AI

  • Proactively identify manual operational processes — deployments, environment management, toil of any kind — and design and implement automation/AI to remove them.
  • Treat using AI to reduce manual work as a first-class priority.

Collaboration and mentoring

  • Come to stakeholders with clear trade-offs ("if I do X, Y slips by Z weeks") rather than waiting for instructions.
  • Communicate solutions clearly, give thoughtful code review, and maintain a high standard of technical communication.
  • Mentor other engineers and help raise the engineering bar through pairing, feedback, and knowledge sharing.

What We're Looking For

  • Hands-on experience using AI tools in your day-to-day engineering, and genuine enthusiasm for adopting new ones — this is central to how we work and matters more to us than any specific language or framework.
  • At least five years of experience in software engineering, with significant hands-on time in DevOps, platform, or SRE-flavoured work.
  • Strong experience with cloud infrastructure (we use AWS) and Infrastructure-as-Code — Terraform or similar.
  • Experience building and operating CI/CD pipelines, and a strong grasp of modern deployment practices — trunk-based development, progressive rollouts, and fast, safe releases.
  • A solid foundation in observability and production operations — monitoring, alerting, incident response, and post-incident learning.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity and ownership — scoping loosely-defined problems, making pragmatic trade-offs, and driving outcomes without waiting to be told what to do.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences and build trust.
  • Proficiency in Test-Driven Development (TDD) and a commitment to writing maintainable code — infrastructure code included.
  • A polyglot mindset — able to quickly learn new languages and technologies; especially with AI-assisted tooling, learning fast matters more than depth in any specific stack.

Non-negotiable Behavioural Expectations

  • Take ownership — drive outcomes, surface problems, and propose solutions proactively rather than defaulting to "I just do what I'm told".
  • Own your responsibilities publicly — don't publicly blame others for things that fall within your scope.
  • Prepare for meetings — come with context, updates, and decisions; don't rehash decisions from previous calls.
  • Show up for the team — be present in the Sydney office (3 days per week) and engaged with your team day to day.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with our current tech stack: Go, Elixir, AWS ECS, AWS SAM, Terraform, BuildKite, GitHub Actions, AWS CloudWatch, and Grafana.
  • Experience with Domain-Driven Design and backend or full-stack product development.
  • Experience with cloud security, compliance, or cost optimisation (FinOps).
  • Experience with system integrations or data migrations.
  • Interest in or experience with Event Sourcing and distributed systems.

What This Role Is Not

  • A ticket-driven ops role or a siloed infrastructure team — you work embedded with product engineers, and you help shape the work, not just execute it.
  • A pure gatekeeper — the goal is paved roads and self-service, not being a human approval step in front of production.
  • A role where AI is optional — using AI tools day to day is central to how we build.
  • Ad hoc work without tracking, code review, or tests — the same engineering standards apply to everyone.
  • Someone who simply does what they're told — you are expected to take ownership and drive outcomes.

How Success Is Measured

Senior Software Engineers are measured across three dimensions:

  • Technical craft and engineering quality — the reliability, security, and maintainability of the infrastructure and pipelines you own, code quality and technical design, collaboration, documentation, and adherence to engineering standards. Evidence looks like improved deployment frequency, reduced incidents, and faster incident resolution.
  • Platform and business impact — the ultimate test is whether your work delivers value: engineers shipping faster and more safely, manual operational work eliminated, fewer outages and faster resolution, and infrastructure that scales with the business.
  • AI and automation adoption — measurable use of AI in your day-to-day engineering, and automations that materially reduce operational toil for the team and the business.

Why This Role?

This is an opportunity to build and run the platform at the heart of a global fintech — shaping the infrastructure, pipelines, and reliability practices every engineer here depends on, and working with a team that has gone all in on modern, AI-first engineering. You'll see the direct impact of your work in every deploy, help shape our global platform, and grow alongside engineers who care deeply about their craft. If you enjoy solving open-ended problems, taking real ownership, and delivering measurable value, we'd love to hear from you.
